Note to self:
Salzstangen (pretzel sticks) are not a replacement for actual food.

Hi Amy,
Speaking of food or non food - what is the sale and presentation of food like? Is the organics industry big? Do people cook from 'scratch' as the Americans describe it, or is it mainly prepared food in the supermarkets that you just take home, heat and serve? Are they very conscientious about plastic?
The only thing I can say about our food scene since you left is that a wholefoods chain is opening a large cafe and foodstore in Bridge Road in Richmond, in July I think. The chain started in Sydney and this will be the first cafe in Melb.
Add some greens to your pretzels!

Hey Lois,
I tend to think the food here, especially the availability, presentation and variety isn't too great compared to Australia. I think we are spoilt, especially when it comes to fresh fruit and vegies. There are a few supermarkets near my house and they never seem to have great variety and freshness. There does seem to be an emphasis on extra packaging in some areas, like you buy rocket, mushrooms, apples etc in pre-packaged lots. But then they don't give you a lot of bags to carry them all home in. At some supermarkets they have the recycling bins out the front and you see people heading out there, and removing all the excess packaging from their groceries (not just the fruit) and chucking it away before they even get home!
I can't say I have noticed a big organics push here, although that could be just cos I haven't got my radar tuned to it, a couple or restaraunts seem to list some organics dishes, but they seem to have only been the up markets ones I have gone to with my parents. I think most people make the bulk of the food from scratch but then buy some sort of artificial flavouring to spice it up a bit. Mostly it's all a bit stodgy. I think you're probably better off in Bridge Rd.
